Final Workshop: Event Series Sustainability and Independent Artistic Production

August 25, 2020, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
Venue: Online & ZK/U Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik, Siemensstr. 27, 10551 Berlin

The ways in which we make art and the methods we use are changing very rapidly. In the coming months, we will again begin to produce dance, theater and performances, new funding instruments will be made available and institutions will change. A great deal will be different. It seems clear that many members of the independent performing arts community will work in a more resource-conscious manner after this crisis than they did before.

On August 25, 2020, the workshop Sustainability and Independent Artistic Production will take place. The workshop is being planned as a hybrid event divided into an online workshop (on the secure platform Ecosero) and as an analog workshop at ZK/U. The participants will be provided with materials in order to prepare for the workshop in advance. We will plan a sufficient number of breaks in order to be able to work efficiently in small groups. The number of participants in the physical workshop at ZK/U is strictly limited.

The goal of this workshop is to support decision-makers in the independent performing arts, as well as on the sides of the funding institutions and the administrators, in making structures more sustainable. The workshop coordinators will elaborate resilient tool kits with the participants for their respective areas of responsibility.

Over the course of five online formats that build upon each other, the Berlin Performing Arts Program dealt with the topics of sustainability and artistic production. Building upon discussion from the time before the pandemic, climate- and resource-relevant challenges for artists, production managers, members of the community and the institutions of the independent performing arts were analyzed. Climate-conscious action and sustainable transformation were placed in a cultural policy context and together, approaches were elaborated, demands were formulated and perspectives beyond the current crisis were presented. This workshop will touch upon the most important aspects of the previous events and go beyond them.
